With its imposing crenellated towers, the Este Castle at Mesola, halfway between a fortress and a luxurious villa, was commissioned by Duke Alphonse II in 1578 as one of the "Delizia" estates of the court, scattered throughout the dukedom.
At that time it was surrounded by a great hunting reserve, similare to the present day Mesola Woods.
Inside the castle you can visit the Mesola Woods and Deer Museum. The local species is particularly well adapted to the coastal wood land environment of the Po Delta Park, where they have lived for centuries in total isolation.
